- HD bikes could get zero custom duties
- Most bikes come from Thailand factory
- Currently, the CBU tax stands at 40 per cent
Harley-Davidson motorcycles in India could see a big price cut in the coming months. The Government of India is in talks to reduce the customs duties for this motorcycle brand to zero.
Currently, Hero MotoCorp – the brand responsible for selling the Harley-Davidson range of bikes in India after the company officially exited the country- imports most of the bikes from Harley’s Thailand plant. As a result, these bikes are already taxed at nil as India and Thailand have a Free Trade Agreement. But some big cruisers come to India from the US as completely built-up (CBU) units. These bikes could see a price cut if this new policy gets through.
Over the last few weeks, the US has been imposing reciprocal taxes on multiple countries including India. This strategy was used so that countries around the world could strike a deal with the US that would benefit both countries. As of now, there are no concrete details on this tax cut policy, but it is highly likely that India would definitely make the US happy in many ways.
