Bajaj has been listed as sixth in the list of leading motorcycle sellers in Africa. It sold more than 60,000 units last year with the help of Bajaj Boxer which has been making a good impression there.
The company produced about 38.3 lakh motorcycles during 2012-2013 out of which 15 lakh vehicles were exported across the world including both two-wheelers and three-wheelers. In the western part of Africa, there is a huge demand for commuter motorcycles due to the growing middle class. Especially in Ghana, the demand is about one lakh two- wheeler units annually.
Bajaj has its presence in 50 countries all over the world and has shown substantial growth till date. In order to be able to deliver its products in Africa, Bajaj Auto has also collaborated with Somoco which is a subsidiary of Mohinani conglomerate.
“Currently, Bajaj's Boxer brand commands a market share of 90 per cent in Uganda, 40 per cent in Nigeria, 35 per cent in Angola and 30 per cent in Kenya. One of the main success factors, apart from the quality of the motorcycle has been the company's ability to cater to the service and spare parts requirements of its customers in these countries. The company is confident that the brand will appeal to the customers through its three primary qualities of reliability, ruggedness and timely service," said Bajaj Auto in a statement.
