MV Agusta to make a comeback in Grand Prix racing

- To return to Grand Prix racing after 40 years

- Announced partnership with Forward Racing

- To race in Moto2 category in 2019

MV Agusta has signed a four-year deal with Forward Racing to compete in Moto2 World Championship. With Moto2 moving to Triumph three-pot engines from 2019, the Italian marque believes that this will help them develop their own chassis and powertrains.

Racing in the premier MotoGP class requires big development budgets and huge team of engineers. Moto2 category on the other hand, is relatively less complicated, thanks to the standardisation of engines across the grid. From the next season, Triumph will supply the engines for Moto2 race bikes, replacing Honda as the sole supplier. This new powertrain is based on the Street Triple’s 765cc inline-three engine. MV Agusta believes that competing in this category will help the brand advance its own inline-three engine and chassis.

MV Agusta boasts of a rich legacy in premier class motorcycle racing. The marque won 18 500cc titles between 1956 and 1974, before appearing on the grid for the last time in 1976. In 2014, MV Agusta re-entered the racing scene through World Superbike and Supersport championships. Now though, the brand is making a comeback to Grand Prix racing. Forward Racing currently runs Suter motorcycles in Moto2 with Eric Granado and Stefano Manzi. Neither of these riders has scored any points in the four rounds so far.
