EICMA 2017: BMW debuts F750GS and F850GS

BMW Motorrad has rejigged its GS range of adventure touring motorcycles with the launch of two new models – the F750GS and the F850GS. While they might look similar to the older 700cc and 800cc GS bikes, the F750GS and the F850GS are based on a brand new platform.

Taking a ‘don’t fix it if it ain’t broke’ approach, BMW hasn’t made major revisions to styling over the previous generation models, apart from making the fairing sharper. The F750GS and the F850GS also get LED headlamps and a new 6.5-inch TFT instrument console, which can be paired with your phone.

Both the bikes are powered by similar 853cc parallel twin engines. Yes, even the F750GS gets an 853cc engine. Go figure.  The difference lies in the power output. The F750GS churns out 75bhp while the F850GS is good for 93bhp. They might look similar, but the F750GS and F850GS are targeted at a different set of audience. The F750GS is meant for the road, thanks to the alloy wheels and road-biased tyres. The F850GS on the other hand, gets longer suspension travel and 21-inch front wheel to make it better at off-roading.

The rider aids include ABS, three riding modes and traction control. It gets electronic suspension, which constantly adapts to your riding style and the terrain, taking into account the selected riding mode. The chassis has also been revised to handle the extra power. Given the recent increase in demand for adventure touring motorcycles in the country, there is a good chance that the F750GS and the F850GS might be introduced in the Indian market, next year.
