A new BMW GS model has been spotted testing in Italy. Rumoured to be based on the parallel-twin platform, this motorcycle will be available in two iterations, one of which will go head on against the Honda Africa Twin CRF1000L.
The spy shot shows the test mule bearing typical BMW GS cues – asymmetric twin headlamp setup, half fairing, edgy fuel tank, raised handlebar and an upright riding position. The tail section features a top case and panniers to improve touring abilities. While this bike rides on alloy wheels, we can expect an off-road focussed variant to be offered with spoke wheels. Reports suggest that the parallel twin engine will be available in two capacities – 800cc and 1000cc. While the smaller variant will be replacement for the F800GS, the litre-class bike will compete with the likes of the Honda Africa Twin, Ducati Multistrada 950 and the KTM 1050 Adventure.
The success of the Honda Africa Twin seems to have shaken things up in the adventure motorcycle segment. While most manufacturers preferred rolling out motorcycles in the 800cc or 1200cc segment, the Africa Twin has now provided an intermediary for those graduating from middleweight adventure bikes. Offering the best of both worlds (adventure as well as touring), this new segment is expected to see a lot of action in the near future.
