2027 Kawasaki Z500 Gets New Colours
    • Standard Z500 gets a new Ebony and Metallic Carbon Gray finish
    • Z500 SE gets far more expressive colours

Kawasaki Z500 and Z500 SE have been updated for 2027 with new colour schemes without, you guessed it, changing the mechanical package. For the Euro market, we don’t understand why India does not have this model. It definitely suits our hot 450cc bracket.

The standard 2027 Z500 will be offered in Ebony and Metallic Carbon Gray. Bleh, fairly restrained combination. The Z500 SE is where the 2027 colour update becomes more interesting. Buyers can choose Candy Persimmon Red with Metallic Carbon Gray or a much brighter Pearl Blizzard White, Candy Lime Green Type 3 and Ebony combination. The latter is easily the more recognisably Kawasaki option and should work particularly well with the Z500’s compact proportions and angular Sugomi bodywork.

It has a smooth 451cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine producing around 44bhp and 42.6Nm. Kawasaki has deliberately tuned this motor around usable low- and mid-range performance for fast street use. Also the Z500 weighs 167kg ready to ride, has a low 785mm seat and 145mm of ground clearance.

That again raises an obvious question for us in India. Why do we still not get the Z500?

Kawasaki India has never given an official reason for leaving the motorcycle out, so anything beyond that point has to be treated as analysis rather than fact. What is clear from Kawasaki India’s current catalogue is that the 451cc platform is already present here. The Ninja 500 uses essentially the same displacement and is currently priced at Rs. 5.76 lakh, ex-showroom. The Eliminator, which also uses Kawasaki’s 451cc parallel-twin family has also been sold in India.

In fact, from a usability point of view, the naked Z arguably makes even more sense for India than the Ninja 500. There is no fairing to worry about in dense traffic, the riding position is upright, the handlebar offers better leverage and its 167kg kerb weight makes it four kilograms lighter than the India-spec Ninja 500.

The problem is far more likely to be commercial. Z500 would run into the KTM 390 Duke R. It costs Rs. 3.39 lakh and develops 44bhp and 39Nm from its 399cc engine. That puts its power almost level with the Kawasaki while still leaving a potentially huge price gap if the Z500 were imported using the same strategy as the Ninja 500.

The Kawasaki does have something the KTMs cannot replicate. That compact parallel-twin engine is smoother in character, has stronger torque and distinctive exhaust note making it a more mature feel than most single-cylinder motorcycles in this class. That difference is meaningful to an enthusiast, but asking customers to spend perhaps Rs. 2 lakh or more simply to gain another cylinder becomes difficult in a price-sensitive market. So yeah, sorry guys.
