We all must agree that the Ninja moniker will always excite us, no matter where you stand on the globe. But when you look at the 250-500cc segment, it has evolved quicker than most manufacturers could keep up. Kawasaki Ninja 300 being one of those recipes which have always worked for beginner riders looking to enter the world of Ninjas has been listed in India at Rs. 3.34 lakh ex showroom for MY27. This makes it Rs. 17,000 more expensive than the outgoing 2026 model.
We were combing through for changes on this model, but found no meaningful mechanical or equipment upgrade to justify the increase. In fact you’re getting lesser as the newer motorcycle is offered with fewer colour choices than its predecessor. The increase amounts to around 5.4 percent with no extra colour, feature, performance or hardware benefit in return. They could at least have brought the Pearl Blizzard White colour from the American market to say the least.
The question, then, is whether the Ninja 300 remains relevant in today’s market. Its strongest advantage continues to be the parallel-twin engine against its closest rivals, the BMW G 310 RR and KTM RC 390 both using single-cylinder engines. Kawasaki’s twin is surely smoother firing with better NVH.
Ninja 300 has a broader seat and a natural riding position against its competitors. Its low saddle and large fuel tank also give it a more relaxed character than its fully faired appearance suggests. These ergonomics support riders who commute through the city and are carrying a passenger often.
But then the BMW is Rs. 44,000 cheaper than the Kawi, produces about 33bhp and 27.3Nm from its 312.12cc single-cylinder engine, weighs 174kg and has an 811mm seat height. It trades 5bhp and the smoothness of a twin against considerably more equipment like ride-by-wire, four riding modes, a colour TFT display, LED lighting and an upside-down front fork. The Ninja still comes with analogue tacho with a basic LCD panel, conventional forks and no selectable electronic rider aids whatsoever.
The KTM RC 390 has always been the better track tool in front of the little Ninja. This too costs Rs. 11,281 less than the 2027 Ninja 300. Its 373.27cc engine produces around 43bhp and 37Nm giving it 4.5bhp and nearly 11Nm more than the Kawasaki. RC comes packed with a sophisticated traction control system, cornering ABS, Supermoto ABS, bidirectional Quickshifter+, ride-by-wire and colour TFT display.
At less money, the KTM provides more performance, stronger electronics and newer chassis hardware. Its 13.7-litre tank is smaller and its single-cylinder engine will not deliver the same smoothness, but it follows a more focused sporting character.
The RC 390 is therefore becomes favourable for riders looking at outright performance and track-focused technology. BMW is the more affordable technology-led alternative. The Ninja’s appeal lies in a narrower space between them.
That narrow appeal reflects a larger issue for small fully faired motorcycles in India. Sports bikes maybe cool and attractive, but they serve fewer everyday requirements against naked motorcycles, retro roadsters or adventure tourers. Nakeds are easier to manage in traffic, retro bikes combine style with a comfortable posture and adventure motorcycles offer luggage options, suspension travel and trail abilities.
Fully faired models can also carry more bodywork that may be costly to repair after a minor fall. Their riding positions are generally less relaxed, pillion space can be limited, and the fairings do not add much value during routine urban use. The limited number of small sports models compared with the growing choice of nakeds and adventure bikes shows how specialist this category has become.
The Ninja 300 still has a reason to exist. There is no direct replacement for its combination of a sub-300cc parallel-twin engine, low seat, large tank and approachable riding position at this price. Riders who value those qualities might still appreciate its character. However, the 2027 update has raised the price, reduced the colour selection and retained the same engine, chassis and equipment.
