  • After 6 months the magic isn't gone yet a semi-honest review where I ignore embrace some less-severe annoyances for a sick bike

    Ramya Shah

I've been wanting a decent but affordable cruiser bike for city and occasional highway rides for a while now. Like most other cases, the usual suspects like the classic 350, meteor 350, and avenger 220 come to mind. But the moment I saw jawa 42 2.1 on my desktop screen first was a memorable one. The test rides of these bikes made me want to get the jawa even more, and thankfully, the folks at the jawa dealership were as helpful, cooperative, and more importantly, understanding as they can be, so nothing really made me have any second thoughts.
The first few days after buying the bike are always magical. I was finding reasons left and right to take the bike for a spin, and it surprisingly hasn't gotten old after 6 months (maybe that's because I've been riding dad's passion plus for 5 years before this so there's a massive difference)
Compared to its closest rival, the classic 350, the jawa stands out in a crowd like a sore thumb. The matte black 2.1 edition won my heart and gave me more second looks from other people than a re can. All 3 colors look great, and I do not regret choosing the black option one bit. Things like alloy wheels, bar-end mirrors, off-set racing stripe, 'classic legends' engravings and embellishments all over the body, and functioning dual exhaust are all standard in the bike and go a long way to make the bike look like something from a higher price range.
The jawa is easier to maneuver in bustling city streets thanks to a 20 kgs lighter body and slightly neutral position than the classic. The seats are also a bit dense in the jawa, so longer rides will be less painful on your butt. The ~7 bhp difference between the two is pretty noticeable too, and the extra 6th gear is a big advantage on highways (it's an actual gear, not overdrive mode or any other gimmicky thing). The liquid cooling kicks in when needed, and makes a noise that's audible up to 30-40 kmph. Speaking of, I like the quieter but still melodic sound of the jawa more than the classic thumping of a re, which I also like.
My biggest fear was regarding the stuff that comes after buying the bike. Like a successful maruti or hyundai, you don't have to lose any sleep over stuff like service centers, parts availability, and affordability if you own a royal enfield. The 1-month/1000 km and 6-month/6,000 km services of my 42 2.1 went by smooth as butter with reminder calls before the service, proper slot booking, and after-service feedback and all. It didn't take more time than other brands, and the quality was good enough. Regarding maintenance, you'll need to perform the regular tasks like chain lubing (this one has o-ring chains so make sure to take care of them) every once in a while. Tubeless tires are a neat addition, and the mileage is similar to the competition wearing classic and meteor badges.
But like all things, the 42 isn't perfect. The fit and finish are not as great as enfields, the bar-end mirrors look cool but make you change your head position to get a complete view of what's happening in the back, and the low ground clearance makes me clench my butt when I face a big bump. Turning and handling are easier than re but you'll have to be more precise with your gearing and throttle to stop the engine from stalling. If you want to customize your ride, the re cruisers are still the ones to go for, jawa is new and some places have parts and components to make your ride your own, but it'll take quite a while before it's as accessible as the royal enfield network.
So there you have it, I had somewhat of an idea of what I was getting into, and I have to live with a couple of annoying issues, but the pros outweigh the cons by a mile for me, and I do not regret buying the 42 2.1 one bit. The mid-range throttle response is very good, especially in the first 3 gears, and to my surprise, the feeling hasn't worn out yet. Hopefully, now you have a bit more idea about what you're getting into when you walk into the dealership.

I bought jawa 42 in Oct 2019, and within 2-3 months I faced a knocking issue in the engine and a complete breakdown of the Engine, they opened the engine and resolved the issue, I asked to remove the mufflers in the second service but it was not possible due to rusting, now in 3 rd year, my bike has gone to service center thrice in a month and still it's not getting started despite changing the battery and paying 7k + amount... Worst experience... I regret buying it now.. Hope I could have bought any other bike or used my old bike instead.... Complete waste of money...

Jawa classic, is a old look vintage type bike. Pick up is good. Stability is good. Smooth drive. But ground clearance bad. With doubles we must reduce speed to less than 10kmph else central stand hits floor of speed-breaker. Also seat is for one use only. This is the only area advantage of re. Else for plain road jawa is good. Servicing centers must improve their technical knowledge to improve performance of bike. Mileage it is too early to comment.

The buying experience is pretty concise. I have ordered this bike (jawa 42-dual abs) on the 23rd of january and i was contacted for the delivery on the 6th of february. The registration took 2 hours and the first time riding experience makes you feel like you were riding a leopard. The bike takes time to get habituated as the ground clearance is pretty low, it takes at least 2 weeks to subconsciously ride without hitting the ground. But once you get habituated, the riding experience is pretty awesome as it produces enough power to feel the bike to its utmost. The seats are pretty uncomfortable and stiff and some might need to change the seats for better comfy. It stands out in traffic and i was stopped it peak traffics on the roads of hyderabad, just to be inquired about the price and performance. The gloss paint of nebula blue is amazing but needs a lot of care and maintenance as it is prone to scratches. Avoid placing luggage on the petrol tank, as it is the most vulnerable place to be put.The servicing costs less than 2000 for the first servicing and needs to be done on time.Pros:Mileage is as claimed. Looks Power Braking is perfect. Cons:Heats up near ankles, Prone to scratches Loose side mirrors (in my bike, at least)Lesser accessories to buy. Hard seats, The fuel meter is pretty inaccurate.

It took near about a month to deliver the bike. Riding experience is good. Took it to 2 tour where distance is near about 450 to 500 km. Regarding the performance, there is no issue when it comes for long ride but the engine gets too hot in the busy road where we need to shift gear. Spare parts are not easily available. Need to purchase that from showroom. Start is a problem for this bike. Engine gets shut down quite often in busy road.
Major draw back, it has not tubeless tires and there is issue with rusting.
Over all performance is very good. Easy ride for long trip.

    Kumar

In my 35 years of experience, one of the worst bikes I have, and the service is very poor. Maintenance cost is very high. Apart from insurance, they asked me to put rsa. Even for a week if the bike is not started the battery gets drained due to a poor charging coil. Around 17500km runs disk break getting noise. Very very worst bike. Please do not go for it.

    Tips for other riders

Change oil after 3000 km. It depends on the oil you use. I am using Motul. Tubeless tiers would definately be good for ride.

    1. Performance is not good.
    2. Worst mileage
    3. Servicing and maintenance costs are high and not well
    4. If you drive more than 3km you can put an omelet in your engine.
    5. No revaluation (asking a very less price)

  • Worst bike
