KTM 390 Duke [2021] Summary

The 2020 KTM 390 Duke continues with the same aggressive streetfighter styling inspired by the bigger 1290 SuperDuke. However, as part of the update, the motorcycle gets new graphics and two new paint schemes.

It is available in Silver Metallic and Ceramic White colour options that come with orange wheels and trellis frame. Nevertheless, the major upgrade comes in the form of the KTM Quickshifter Plus which is offered as standard equipment. The Quickshifter Plus is a bi-directional unit that enables clutchless upshifts as well as downshifts.

The 390 Duke comes powered by a BS6-compliant version of the 373cc, single-cylinder mill. KTM has retained the power figures and the Duke continues to produce 42.9bhp and 37Nm. Apart from these changes the streetfighter remains unchanged. It sports a colour-TFT screen that can be connected to the rider’s smartphone via Bluetooth. Moreover, the 390 Duke also has riding modes and ride-by-wire as part of its electronic kitty. In terms of cycle parts, the bike rides on inverted forks up front and a monoshock at the rear. Meanwhile, braking is done by disc brake at both ends along with ABS.

As for competition, the KTM 390 Duke goes up against the BMW G310 R, and Honda CB300R in the country.

KTM 390 Duke [2021] Expert Opinion

We test 2020 KTM 390 Duke BS6 around Bajaj’s Chakan test track to bring you these first impressions.

Introduction

KTM 390 Duke Action

KTM India updated its entire portfolio to comply with the BS6 emission norms, and we recently got a chance to take the new 390 Duke for a test ride. The new bike pushes the envelope with new, first-in-segment features. But is it as exciting as the BS4 motorcycle? We rode the motorcycle around Bajaj’s Chakan test track to bring you these first impressions.

The Visuals

KTM 390 Duke Right Front Three Quarter

The transition from BS3 to BS4 back in 2017 brought comprehensive changes to the 390 Duke. This time though, KTM decided to keep the changes minimal. Thus, the styling cues feature a very familiar design. KTM has revised the colour palette, and the updated motorcycle is available in two options – Silver Metallic and Ceramic White. The Silver Metallic 390 Duke comes with an orange chassis, black sub-frame and orange wheels. The Ceramic White option features a black chassis, white sub-frame and black wheels.

KTM 390 Duke Front view

The limited styling upgrade was most likely done to keep the price increase minimal during the BS6 transition. The motorcycle looks appealing and it is one of the most desirable products in its segment. The build quality feels decent but it’s not segment-leading. That said, we did not hear any unpleasant noises from the panels during our brief test ride. We would wait for a proper road test to further comment on the build quality.

The Package

KTM 390 Duke Headlamp

The KTM 390 Duke is the most feature-rich motorcycle in its segment of the Indian market. The company had already set a benchmark with premium hardware such as full-LED lighting and Bluetooth-enabled, full-colour TFT display. The instrument cluster gets a plethora of information although the turn-by-turn navigation system, which is currently offered on the 390 Adventure, is not available for the 390 Duke.

KTM 390 Duke Instrument cluster

In terms of performance, the 390 Duke BS6 retains the same power and torque output numbers as the BS4 motorcycle. Thus, the 373cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor continues to deliver 42.9bhp of power at 9,000rpm and 37Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. The slipper clutch equipped six-speed gearbox feels crisp and precise, while the new Quickshifter+ system enhances the overall experience.

KTM 390 Duke Frame

The braking setup comprises of a 320mm disc at the front and a 230mm rotor at the back – both grabbed by ByBre sourced callipers.

The Ride

KTM 390 Duke Action

Push the starter button, and you are greeted by a relatively quieter exhaust note. Similar is the case with the engine character. While the power and torque numbers are identical to the BS4 motorcycle, the BS6 bike feels mellower than its predecessor. The power delivery is very linear, and there aren’t any surprises when the engine heads into the higher rev-band.

KTM 390 Duke Frame

The engine feels uncomfortable under the 4,000rpm levels. It starts to pull away cleanly post that mark with a noticeable step-up in acceleration from 6,000rpm onwards. The 100kmph mark is crossed in the third gear with three more gears at your disposal. The long straight on Bajaj’s test track saw a top speed of 147kmph with a 90kg rider. My colleague, who hits the gym more often than I do, witnessed a top speed of 163kmph.

(All figures mentioned above are speedometer indicated)

KTM 390 Duke Gear-Lever

The Quickshifter+ works fine most of the time, although the upshifts felt inconsistent on a few occasions. Part of the reason behind the uneven performance in the upshifts could be associated with the lack of pressure sensor on the gear lever. We found that the upshifts work best in the higher rev band. The clutchless downshifts, on the other hand, worked flawlessly. Purists can turn-off the system completely.

KTM 390 Duke Rear Wheel & Tyre

Anchoring hardware is carried forward from the BS4 model, and the brakes continue to offer a commendable feedback. The dual-channel ABS ensures that the hardest of brake lever inputs are forgiven easily. The Supermoto mode turns off the safety net at the rear wheel.

KTM 390 Duke Front Brake

The suspension setup, too, is similar to the BS4 motorcycle, and the shock absorption tasks are handled by 43mm WP APEX upside-down forks with open-cartridge system at the front and a preload-adjustable mono-shock at the back. The setup feels firm, and confidence-inspiring in the corners. The geometry has not changed either. Thus, the BS6 390 Duke feels just as agile as its predecessor, and the bike feels comfortable with sharp direction changes. The Metzeler Sportec M5 (H-rated) tyres deliver plenty of grip to push the motorcycle around the corners.

KTM 390 Duke Action

The refinement levels are noticeably better than the BS4 motorcycle. There are, however, some vibrations still evident from the footpegs.

Our Take

KTM 390 Duke Right Rear Three Quarter

The short, first ride experience was exciting, and the 390 Duke still puts a smile on the rider’s face. The power and torque output numbers do not suffer from any drop despite complying with the latest emission norms, and the motorcycle can still clock a good top-speed. The kerb weight of the vehicle has increased from 163kg to 167kg, but the difference is hardly noticeable.

KTM 390 Duke Front view

The overall character, however, has become mellower than ever before. It’s like having the crispiest of French Fries made from the finest of potatoes but without the seasoning. That said, the KTM 390 Duke is still among the most value-for-money and fun-to-ride motorcycles in its segment. The 390 Duke BS6 retails at an ex-showroom, Delhi price of Rs 2,52,928, which is slightly higher than the BS4 bike’s Rs 2,48,212 tag. For that marginal premium, buyers get a BS6 compliant motorcycle that gets a Quickshifter+ as standard and feels more refined than its predecessor.

A Beast waiting to be Unleashed!!

      Ankit Anand

After having gone through almost every >200cc bike, starting from Jawa 42 2.1, Interceptor, Continental GT even Gixxer 250, KTM ADV 390, i fell head over heels for DUKE 390. Saw and read great reviews about it, saw the negative points too but kinda peace with them. The Pros are better n bigger than Cons!!
Got this Wonderful Beast on 21st August after waiting for almost 2-3 months but the wait was worth it when I saw it in front of my eyes!
The dealership here in Lucknow was a bit adamant and I found them stiff and uptight, but anyway, the deal was sealed. They fussed even for giving the stock helmet!
The bike on the initial 2 days of its existence gave an average of 11-12kmpl, and then it increased to 23-24kmpl in the 1st week. I guess it's getting used to the rider ;P Jokes apart, the engine would take a little time to get refined which would later give a better mileage later on.
And it sure as hell is a Head-turner! Be it traffic lights, be it, society people, be it, children, all eyes get glued on this handsome Beast!

      Tips for other riders

This bike is definitely for people who have a decent bit of experience in riding bikes, as this beast needs to be tamed with care and caution. The throttle response is such that even my father said that 40-45km/h speed seems a lot on this. Trust me, my father has driven a lot of cars, and rode bikes n scooters. Such was his observation that even I had to agree with him. Drive safe, and take care! :)

Best in its segment. Pocket rocket

      Tushar Kant Singh

First of all, it's top-notch in its segment. If you want power, performance, and looks then you shouldn't think twice before purchasing. If you love riding long distances, go on rides then this is it if you have a budget within 4lakh. This bike has more features than any 500 - 600 cc bike on the market. It can easily outperform any bike in its segment. For me, I use this bike mainly for traveling long distances/ trips. I don't use it for the daily commute or in the city. Once you get a habit of this bike, there's no going back. You won't feel confident in other bikes because their electrical system, performance, braking, and riding modes are more advanced than the one's in 5 - 6 lakh range. The servicing would cost around rs 2k to 3k every 7500kms. But I service it in every 6k kms.
      Pros
      1. Great performance & control.
      2. Nice tft instrument cluster
      3. Good looks.
      Cons
      1. Feels overpowered for city use.
      2. Gets heated in city use.

      Tips for other riders

This bike is a beast, use its power wisely. Don't go too aggressive. To keep the engine healthy change oil every 6k kms if you are not riding aggressively but if your riding style is aggressive then change the oil every 5k kms. And always keep track of coolant else it would affect the engine a lot. Don't be careless in maintenance.

KTM will rocket through your pocket and introduce you to the worst customer service in India.

      Sweekrith

      1) Buying experience was terrible, they changed my address and registered my bike in another RTO.
      2) KTM service stations are the worse when it comes to good mechanics. General service is terrible. Please check your local KTM service station's Google reviews and study their comments. That should give you an idea of things before you buy the bike. They forgot to put the spark plug properly, didn't clean or lube the chain and there was soap water in my tank.
      3) Had bad issues in getting my Warranty and Extended warranty claims. They try everything in the book to reject your claim.
      4) Parts used are definitely cheap, had to change the head and the Arm within 18k kms, and the headlight clamp broke within 10k kms and that's worth a lot, their warranty team and service center team acted very unprofessionally
      5) Its a fast bike, but it has maintenance issues and parts break off within 5k kms. Stock crash guard bolt cut off, so had to use all sorts of juggad to handle that.
      6) TFT screen is not impressive, with lots of moisture and flickers, if you ask the service center they say it's normal.
      7) No proper mechanism for customers to escalate issues, you'll meet very unprofessional service center managers who are not interested in solving the issue. They don't have a centralized call center number like other brands nor will you be able to escalate without running pillar to post.
      8) Biggest gripe is that the bike has a lot of expensive parts and their warranty team will find ways to reject the warranty which impacts the customer's pockets and the experience.

      Tips for other riders

Double-check your bike before taking a delivery or before dropping the bike at the service station. Once the warranty is over, find yourself a good, reputed mechanic and your bike may have a better life Their headlights and crash guards are notorious to break, so constantly check on them and get them replaced quickly. Be aware of the service center managers and make sure you provide reviews based on your experience on their app and in Google reviews so other riders don't get caught in the nightmare.
