Honda Navi [2016-2017] Summary

Honda says that they wanted to create something fun and that’s when the idea of Navi was born. Targeted at an age group 18-25, the Navi is a cross between a motorcycle and a scooter.

While the Navi looks like a motorcycle, it isn’t. It is powered by the same engine that powers the Activa – an 110cc engine. This engine produces 8bhp of power and 9Nm of torque.  The Navi will be available in three body styles - Navi street, Navi adventure and the Navi off-road. With Honda offering a slew of optional extras for the Navi, customisability is a crucial part of its appeal. It is available in five paint schemes - red, white, black, green and orange.

Inspired from Honda’s Grom bike, the Navi is a compact small scooter, which looks fun and interesting. In fact, Honda is currently in the process of launching a range of Navi scooters and we’ll see them in the next few months.  In terms of the dimensions, the Navi measures 1805mm in length, 748mm in width, 1039mm in height and 1286 mm in wheelbase. It has a ground clearance of 156mm, a seat height of 765mm, a kerb weight of 101kg and a fuel tank capacity of 3.8-litres.

The Navi can be booked through Honda’s dealership across the country and at the same time through an android app which is available on Google play store. The Navi is priced at Rs 42,779 (ex-showroom, Delhi)

Honda Navi [2016-2017] Expert Opinion

If I had a penny for each time guys over at Honda uttered worlds like ‘unique’ and ‘fun’ to describe the NAVI all through this press ride, I’d possibly have enough money to buy myself one. Okay, I may have exaggerated a bit there. Admittedly, the NAVI (New Additional Value for India) is unique and something which you cannot really typecast. Sure, on paper it’s a much simpler deal (Read: 110cc two-wheeler with a CVT) but then you look at it, and all your presumptions as a viewer are challenged.

What is it?

If I had a penny for each time guys over at Honda uttered worlds like ‘unique’ and ‘fun’ to describe the NAVI all through this press ride, I’d possibly have enough money to buy myself one. Okay, I may have exaggerated a bit there. Admittedly, the NAVI (New Additional Value for India) is unique and something which you cannot really typecast. Sure, on paper it’s a much simpler deal (Read: 110cc two-wheeler with a CVT) but then you look at it, and all your presumptions as a viewer are challenged.

In many ways the NAVI resembles Honda’s global 125cc mini bike – the Grom, which is a full-on motorcycle complete with a 4-speed gearbox. The NAVI, on the other hand, faces a bit of an identity crises; it's part scooter (by heart) and part motorcycle (by appearance) and when it comes to appearance, the NAVI is anything but ordinary. Take its slab-like single piece fuel tank or the dinky hexagonal headlight, for instance, which aren’t really that big but leave a good impression nonetheless. Interestingly, Honda has designed the NAVI in a way that it appears smaller than it actually is. Even its 765mm seat height, equal to the Activa 3G, feels quite lower. Take the mirrors off and I believe the NAVI will easily fit in most SUVs or MPVs.

The NAVI looks more scooter-like when viewed from the rear. The side mounted monoshock suspension, bulging exhaust and the half-exposed engine are all finished in black. The engine in here sits behind the rider’s legs, leaving a gaping hole underneath the fuel tank for some storage space. See what they meant by ‘unique’?

How does it ride?

Now on to the ‘fun’ bit. The NAVI uses the same 110cc single-cylinder engine that Honda otherwise puts in the Activa 3G. What’s changed though are the power and torque figures, albeit slightly. At 7.7bhp and 8.96Nm, the NAVI makes less power but more torque than its scooter equivalent. It’s also around 7 kilos lighter than the Activa as a result of using plastic body panels. All said and done, the NAVI hardly feels any different when it comes to either straight-line grunt or the soundtrack as it chugs along at city speeds with minimal vibrations. What’s entirely different, though, are the ergonomics and the way the NAVI handles.

Once aboard, the ergonomics of the NAVI begin to really impress. The narrow seat allows you to get well forward over the centre of this thing and the high, wide bars fall to hand easily for good enough feedback. Yes, it has no aspirations of getting onto the highway, but the NAVI is such a sweet handler everywhere else – its lively at both slow and medium speeds, thanks to the compact frame and the model’s inherent lightness. Even with its abbreviated wheelbase (compared to a regular motorcycle) and puny 10-inch wheels, the Honda was stable all across the cobbled roads of the Imagica theme park where we were made to thrash it.

Scooters generally tend to ride a bit stiff in the absence of a pillion but this cannot be said for the NAVI. The telescopic upside-down forks up front soak up bumps with ease and the rear monoshock is compliant as well. Having ridden the Activa in all its forms, I expected some amount of mid-corner bump steer over rough surfaces but the NAVI stayed properly solid. The budget-minded MRF Nylogrips weren’t too bad either and filled me up with enough confidence to flick the NAVI from side to side in a jiffy.

Anything else I should know?

The NAVI’s pocket-sized frame is overshadowed by quirky design bits and a sense of sportiness that summons a seasoned rider to hop on and tear up the streets. Only thing is, you’re out of puff at about 80kmph or say 85kmph if you happen to find a downhill. That still doesn’t take away from the fact that the NAVI is a brilliant commuting machine, one that can be as much fun as big displacement motorcycles in traffic.

With a base price of Rs 42,600 (ex-showroom, Mumbai), the NAVI represents excellent value, however, the price shoots up quickly as you factor in optional accessories  like the number plate and a side stand, besides registration charges and insurance. The NAVI, then, will set you back by around Rs 50,000 on-road. Honda even has an accessory package that costs upwards of Rs 5,000, if you dare to splurge more on your NAVI.

Why should I buy one?

Because there’s nothing remotely like it in the market? Or the fact that it will probably put a smile on your (or a passer-by’s) face as you scoot around in town.

However, if you’re considering the NAVI over any regular scooter as a practical two-wheeler, do keep in mind that there is hardly any storage space. Most scooters have ample under seat storage and some more on the foot well. The NAVI has none, well, nearly none. There is some storage space under the fuel tank but it’s not exactly handy. As for the under seat storage, there is room only for the customary toolkit and some documents.

Where does it fit in?

Nowhere, to be brutally honest. Honda India themselves left it on us journalists to define whether the NAVI is a scooter or a motorcycle. The way I see it, it’s a welcome change from the sea of same old 110cc scooters and commuter motorcycles that have been ruling the streets. So whether you’re looking to get into the thin end of motorcycling or just looking for an incredibly fun yet inexpensive way to get around town, then the NAVI is for you.

Identity crisis aside, the NAVI undoubtedly is the coolest thing Honda India has done in a long, long time.

      Value for Money

      Underrated-but an absolute joy

      Abhishek Pandey

I bought the honda navi adventure edition in july, 2017. After months of intensive research on scooters, i finally opted for this quirky little devil. I did not want to go with the "boring" old safe choice of the activa and also did not want to burn a hole in my pocket, and this was just the perfect choice. I'll summaries my overall experience as briefly as possible-1) ride experience- an absolute joy, couldn't have asked for better. What makes it unbelievably fun to ride is the fact that the riding posture is a natural 2-wheeler posture, so you immediately feel a sense of ease, unlike other scooters where the seating is akin to that of a simple chair, with your feet just resting in front. Just this simple point takes the balance, maneuverability and ride comfort to a whole new level. As far as ride comfort goes, other scooters probably don't even come in the same bracket for comparison, and this has been agreed to by all people who have borrowed my scooter and ridden. Pick-up is buttery smooth, braking is more than decent, and speeds of upto 65-70 kmph are almost vibration-less. The light weight ensures flickability through city traffic a breeze, further enhanced by, again, the natural 2-wheeler riding posture. The front telescopic suspension works like a charm, while the single rear monoshock suspension does make one jump a bit on bumpy roads, and could do much better with some refinement or potential modifications in future. But then, one is dealing with a 110cc scooter, so it is not expected to be fun over potholes! overall, once one gets into the habit of riding a navi, the entire concept of scooter-riding changes. For such a small and light scooter, it packs more than a punch. The ride quality is the biggest clincher if one is going for the navi. 2) looks- the appearance may generate polarising views. Personally, looks was the first thing that caught my attention. I went with the adventure edition to get more of that bike-ish feel. Whether or not people like the design, it doesn't fail to capture people's attention nonetheless. I personally love the overall looks, and although opinions may differ, the most negative comment i have come across is "toy bike" (which is understandable from a first time looker's perspective).3) performance- no complains whatsoever. Returns a decent mileage between 45-50 kmpl in regular city traffic. Engine is refined as beautifully as can be, and daily commuting is a breeze- and fun too!4) servicing and maintenance- same as any conventional scooter. Regular servicing keeps the little guy fit and fine and greatly ups the overall fun quotient.5) pros- pretty much summed up above. For those looking to make the navi a little more practical, the storage box (priced separately) is pretty handy. One can also make small modifications to enhance the overall practicality- a side-bag/box, helmet-lock and things like that. 6) cons- since navi is my first scooter, i was prepared for a few small issues, and so personally i haven't been greatly troubled by them, unlike other scooter (read riders for whom the definition of a scooter is activa), who may take a little time to get adjusted. The biggest blunder honda made is the absence of a fuel gauge (which has thankfully been rectified in 2018 i believe). For a scooter that has been completely designed and manufactured in india, where around 110% of people ask "kitna deti hai?" (alongwith "kitne ki hai", accounting for 85-90% of the population!) it is unbelievable how a seasoned campaigner like honda went ahead without it. Top that off with a small fuel tank (3.8 l), it was a recipe for disaster. However, now that it has been rectified, it is a much more practical for the indian market. Honda also could have done better than that 3.8l fuel tank, say, around 4.5l would have been much better. Another little issue is the position of the pillion footpegs, which results in the rider's calf frequently brushing against the pillion's foot, especially in stop-go traffic. Finally, i feel alloy wheels would have made this a complete package (this is not a con exactly). For a scooter designed as a bike, this could have easily been done, and since the scooter is the cheapest in its segment by a long way, another 2k wouldn't have been much of a problem, esp. Considering that the navi isn't aimed at the conventional scooter market.Overall, the navi is an absolute piece of joy in a very, very affordable price range. It is sad that the sales figures don't do much justice to the bike, and i believe that the fuel-gauge and fuel capacity are the biggest culprits to that. I've seen people borrowing it from me and could not believe the comfort levels, and yet these same people would invariably go and spend around 10-15k extra to go for the "safe" (and dull, boring) option of activa with the same 110cc engine with not half the fun, essentially because of:1) fuel gauge (this should not be an issue any more) and larger fuel tank2) the front foot board and underseat storage (not possible in the navi because of the different design)3) the navi is not what you see at every street corner. The navi is a prime example of why two-wheeler manufacturers are so reluctant and apprehensive to introduce fun, exciting new concepts to the indian market, in-spite of the tremendous prospects. I do hope the navi concept does not die as a one-off conceptual disaster. It is nothing like we've ever had in india, and it deserves to live on respectably. It certainly has the promise to create a legacy of its own. It is the best 110 cc scooter in the indian market by a distance. It is not something that an average person will recommend, but if you're a connoisseur in terms of ride quality.

      Gorette Pinheiro

Buying experience very poor, price difference between different outlets, only after clarification and confirming with sales outlet price corrected , very poor communication skill of the sales department servicing and maintenance poor also bike giving less mileage, upon informing service personal no correction done.

      Ride to the heaven

Its a great innovation, combination of both motorcycle and scooter. I think design is very unique in the market. Honda navi is a bike which can be used for short and average trips. I have find that its fuel capacity is very less and average is quiet reliable. Tyres are very attractive and are tubeless.

      My first ever Two wheeler

      Kaustubh

Honda experimented this two wheeler and I must say that their experiment was a success. Even after 2 years and 5000km completion, this ride still feels new and fresh. The kerb weight is 101 kg which is really very good. Even a Royal Enfield bullet rider was easily attracted to this ride. Speaking of fuel economy, please don't expect mileage from the Navi, it is a purely fun ride aiming towards the younger class. Servicing would cost you Rs. 500 in every 5-6 months time which is not so bad. If you buy a white version of the Navi, cleaning mud can be a challenge. Please remember that the Navi has less metal and more carbon fibre. Seating is a big challenge. The Navi is a blessing when it comes to traffic. It can go through the small gaps during a traffic jam and the weight doesn't affect you at all. Think twice before opting for the Navi.
