Hero’s Impulse was a product far ahead of its time – the sharp styling and high seat height were a turn off for most Indian customers. However, a small but loyal bunch of off-road enthusiasts keep wishing for something to replace it, and at EICMA 2017 Hero MotoCorp showed off the Xpulse concept, which might just be what the ‘transroader’ philosophy was about in the first place. This concept is an adventure-touring motorcycle and not an off-road biased two-wheeler like the Impulse. The company has taken particular care to keep the styling middle of the road, and the seat height low. It is believed that in concept form it is running the 200cc oil-cooled single from the upcoming Extreeme, mated to a six speed gearbox. An ABS counter is visible on the front disc brake but not on the rear disc. It spoked rims are a combination of 21 inch front and 19 inch rear diameter, with on/off road tyres mounted on them. Hard luggage was also mounted on the machine displayed at EICMA, although surprisingly for an adv motorcycle, the exhaust ends at approximately the same level as its exit from the engine, and not under the seat.
Hero maintains that the Xpulse is a concept, made to judge the reaction of the public, and if there is a favourable response, it will put the motorcycle into production. However, don’t expect the Xpulse to make a debut before the Xtreeme 200 goes on sale – the adventure-touring segment still remains very much a niche one in the Indian market.
