The American Beast
Srihari Ananthapadmanabhan B V
Buying the Harley-Davidson Iron 883 is one among my best ever investments. The showroom people are very polite and helpful. I get the bike picked up and dropped for regular service. The bike costed me around 9.5L and an additional accessories of 2L. Obviously the beast has no question about performance. The bike goes to a maximum speed of 210kmph. On with the ride the rhythm of the silencer makes us feel the speciality of the american motor company. Even at 200kmph the stability of the bike remaind the same. Buying a Harley means you must be ready to spend. The services are not cheap. It costs me around 13K bugs for service and 9k per year for RSA and an additional 10K for insurance. That is on a whole 31K a year minimum. The myth people think that harley is for huge muscular people is completely false. You must have the bike and ride it for a week or two to understand the performance rather than a single test drive. I purchased the bike in just a single visit. The people in the showroom offered me doorstep service for delivery thereafter. On a whole hats of the Harley Davidson Motor Company on making this beast.

Awesome looking. Not one of those bikes that looks like a souped up royal enfield. Comfortable ride, great styling and ample power. It sounds great, i added a screaming eagle exhaust and i feel it’s louder than i’d have liked. The bike allows for a whole lot of customisation to personalise it. I use it to ride to my office daily. Only issue is that the engine feels hot and heats up my legs during traffic jams in the afternoon. The spares are very expensive.

I purchased this bike 7 months back. Totally satisfied with the purchase. Such a fantastic bike to ride on the roads. It is a little bit costly but believe me this bike will blow your mind. I travelled to some dance places like lucknow but faced no problem at all, i also travelled to nepal with this bike believe me this bike is king of all bikes. Harley davidson iron 883 engine powered by the 883 cc, electronic sequential port fuel injection (espfi), air-cooling engine and its churn out the maximum power of 50 bhp @ 5,500 rpm and maximum torque of 69 nm @ 3,500 rpm. Iron 883 top speed of 200+ kmph with the 17 kmpl of mileage. Iron engine mated to the 6-speed manual gearbox transmission. This bike used the 39 mm showa suspension at the front with dual piston disc brake and coil-over, pre-load dual adjust suspension at the rear with dual piston disc brake. Its main pros is appealing design, powerful engine, ride quality, elegant and robust styling, anti-lock braking system. And if you talk about its cons then main cons is not for everyone, vibrations and noise, low mileage, expensive after-sales service, low ground clearance. In the last totally satisfied with the bike i purchased.

1. Buying experience: i bought my motorcycle (iron sportster iron 883) in the later half of 2012 from bengal harley davidson, kolkata. The process of purchase was simple and effective. 2. Riding experience: the riding experience on this motorcycle was always awesome on expressways and flat roads, irrespective of tough traffic being on the roads. The acceleration and braking were the best thing about it. The simultaneous vibration bore the hd trademark and i loved it. Then came the bad roads, the potholes and the bike suffered. The ground clearance was less. And bad bumps often scraped the lower portion of the bike. The ride on such roads was outright hard and bad. I changed the fork oil but it proved to be no good. The solution that the showroom offered was costing 1.25 Lakhs as it involved changing both the front and rear suspensions. So, the bastards were basically giving me 4 suspensions for the cost of a honda cbr 150 / yamaha r15. I denied, put my foot down, went home and did as much research over the months that i could. Finally, a few months back i bought two progressive 412 13.5 Inch rear suspensions and two 412 front fork springs with progressive fork oil. I imported it from us and the entire kit (inclusive of custom duties & taxes) costed me 34 thousand bucks. And boy !! has it done wonders to the riding quality. The motorcycle is now sexier than ever. I still have to be careful around the bumps and bad speedbreakers. But the potholes are now history. 3. Details about looks and performance can be found on hd website and other 3rd party websites . Nothing extra to add from my side.4. Service and maintenance: in the past 4 1/2 years, i have had 6 servicings only. And on an average, each servicing has costed me about 9 grands. And that goes for most other models as well. This motorcycle is basically very tough. If you run it regularly, even for your daily chores, it can do without maintenance for long periods. The parts really last long. Very long. Comparatively, the triumph bonneville costs 30 grands for a single scheduled servicing. Mindfully, it will do you a lot of good if you start servicing the motorcycle yourself after 3 years of purchase. Because by this time, your zero debt insurance will come to an end and 3rd party insurance rules will apply. For keeping the motorcycle in a trouble free condition, one must, and i insist, must do the following:(a) keep battery detached from the bike, if not running for more than 20 days. Also, buy a battery charger when purchasing the bike. Don't even think of replacing the hd battery with other cheaper ones from the market. They will die out miserably coz the bike draws heavy current while starting.(B) keep wd 40, x1-r lubricants, black shoe polish (as engine blackener), 3m power brake cleaner, autosol polish, formula / meguiar's tire dresser, glycerine, non-organic brake pads and loctite glue / thread locker, apart from the general toolkit. You can learn their application and usage on youtube. It will help you a lot. 5. There isn't much left for me to say anything on pros and cons. The aforementioned points have summarised it all.Thanks.Rohit singh

Tips for other riders
Take specific care of battery and tires if not riding for longer durations. They can burn a hole through your buttocks if you leave the motorcycle unattended.
