Introduction

We have got ourselves a tool roll! Sold by Garage 52, it’s called Garage 52 Via Terra Tool Roll Pro. Yes, that’s quite a mouthful. So, we’ll just call it the Tool Roll Pro from here on.

And why is it good news, you ask? Well, if you like adventure riding – and you don’t necessarily need an adventure bike to do that, mind – you ought to have one such tool on you. Borrowing from Garage 52’s product description, a tool roll comes in handy if one needs to wrench by the roadside, on a forest trail or even on a mountaintop, which is quite likely on any adventure outing.

Now here’s what the Tool Roll Pro is all about…

It’s big

It sure is. It can hold maybe three times as many tools your bike comes with as standard. That means besides the usual screwdriver, two Allen keys and three spanners provided to loosen the seat, open a panel, or remove the wheels, you can also pack in an extra spark plug, many nuts and bolts, some wires, zip ties, a penknife, a pair of pliers and even a slim torch, not to mention tyre irons. Phew, that list was long.

It’s durable

I know everything seems more durable than the PVC tool pouch bike makers supply as standard. And that’s because it’s mostly true. I know my son’s pen pouch is more durable. But, the Tool Roll Pro takes this game to a completely new level. It uses Cordura for its exterior construction. For the uninitiated, Cordura is a trademarked fabric proven to be light but extremely resistant to tear, abrasions and scuffs. It’s water resistant too. These are attributes one appreciates on any adventure. Inside, the roll uses polyester with PU coating; the coating is there just in case if you are clumsy with your drink while drawing out tools.

It’s handy

Now, on the face of it, the Tool Roll Pro does seem a tad too big. And wide. It’s definitely not one of those rolls that will conveniently sit on your dirt bike’s front fender. But remove the backing plate and the Pro rolls up nicely into a... well, roll. Now, it’s easy to put in your backpack, or to strap it onto the bike, courtesy of those thoughtfully wide loops. In fact, the Pro fits quite well as a tail bag even with the backing plate in place.

It’s useful

To begin with thanks to its wide nature, the Tool Roll Pro makes a large for and handy work area anywhere you choose. Also being red on the inside makes it easier to spot things. We like the magnetic square that stops your nuts and washers from rolling away from you. And the elastic loops help hold the tool securely. One has to be smart with the placement of tools nonetheless, since the loops are of varying sizes. Garage 52 also claims that the Pro can hold tyre irons!

Should you buy one?

The Garage 52 Via Terra Tool Roll Pro (guess it is justified to call it as its makers intended now that we reached the end of the article) is a useful thing to have. It’s not really expensive at around Rs 1,600 and it does come with a one-year warranty. We’d say buy it if you leave the confines of the city often. And you can do that HERE.
