Mahindra Gusto Final Long Term report

The Mahindra Gusto was with us for over five months and the fact that I rode it for about 1,000km per month speaks a lot about my love for scooters. They have spoilt me. Primarily, for the ease of riding and also for the quality of this two-wheeler being convenient over motorcycles. No wonder I chose the Gusto over the option of other bikes/cars for my daily use.

The Mahindra Gusto fulfills all what a scooter should do. Our monthly reports of the Gusto have explained the benefits of the different features, the engine and performance, the ride and handling and almost all that an owner will do with the scooter. The near to ownership experience has been good overall, with little to no complaints.

But today, in our Indian market where there are various scooters from different manufacturers, will the Mahindra Gusto live up to the expectations of a prospective buyer? Had I been given more options of scooters, especially its competitors like the Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter or the new Hero Duet/Maestro Edge; I definitely would have given it a second thought.

The bland looks are okay with me but none of my female friends liked it. Thankfully the LED pilot lamps add a bit of sparkle to the fascia irrespective of the uninspiring apron upfront. The side and the rear part aren’t alluring either. Let alone the looks, the add-on features are distinctive attributes, but the competition has moved on with better and practical features now. The Hero Duet/Maestro Edge gets an under-seat light and charger, digital and analog instrument cluster, external fuel lid, integrated braking system etc. The Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter and all other rivals are lighter and nimble in comparison to the Gusto. And all of these are in the same price range.

Nonetheless, the Gusto has a strong build quality and the engine refinement is on par with its competitors. Our hassle-free long term experience has indicated it to be a value for money product and the accessible service centres have ensured that the scooter was as good as new. I don’t know if the Gusto has got to the better of the rivals or the segment leaders in the Indian market, but with whatever I could do with it, I’m happy with the reliable product. I will be returning the Gusto to the company with a heavy heart.
