    Introduction

Ather 450X Right Front Three Quarter

After spending most of my time on a humble 125cc commuter motorcycle, switching to an electric scooter felt like stepping into a completely different world. This Ather 450X came to me after Anuj had already lived with it, and I inherited it for a couple of months to see how it fit into everyday life. Over these two months, with mixed usage and the convenience of home charging, the 450X showed me just how much an electric scooter can offer, while also highlighting the areas where it still demands a few compromises.

    What I Liked

Let me start with the obvious. The design. The 450X still looks modern and unmistakably Ather. Even today, it turns heads and feels premium in a sea of conventional scooters.

The riding dynamics were a pleasant surprise. Coming from a 125cc commuter, the agility and responsiveness stood out immediately. It felt light on its feet, easy to place in traffic, and confidence-inspiring at city speeds. The controls were intuitive, and the learning curve was almost non-existent.

Performance is another strong suit. The instant acceleration never got old, especially in Sport mode, and quick overtakes were effortless. The multiple ride modes also allowed me to tailor the scooter’s behaviour depending on my mood and requirement, which added genuine flexibility.

Next up, the instrument panel and software experience deserve special mention. The touchscreen was crisp, informative, and mostly lag-free. Navigation, ride stats, and settings were all easy to access, and the overall software experience felt far more advanced than anything else in the segment.

Then there is Magic Twist regen. Once you get used to it, riding becomes smoother and more intuitive. It reduced brake usage significantly in traffic and made stop-go riding less tiring. It also

Reliability over these two months was solid, with no unexpected hiccups, which added to the peace of mind.

    The Complaints I Have

While the scooter impressed me in many areas, a few things did start to bother me over time. The seating ergonomics were not ideal for longer rides. The seat felt narrow, and I often wished for more support, especially during extended city runs. This was especially true while riding two-up.

The handlebar occasionally conflicted with my knees while making tight turns, which broke the otherwise easy riding experience. The body also felt a bit too slim, which may look sporty but did not translate into overall comfort.

Even range remained a concern. While usable for daily commuting, it required planning, and spontaneous long rides needed a second thought. The absence of a USB charging port also felt like a miss on such a tech-forward scooter.

    Ather 450X Underseat Storage

Practicality took another hit with the underseat storage. Not being able to store a full-face helmet was inconvenient, especially for daily use. Ride comfort was another area where the 450X struggled. The stiff suspension made rough roads uncomfortable, and sharp bumps were felt clearly. I wish Ather sorts this out in the next update.

Lastly, the brakes felt a bit hasty. They were effective, but the initial bite was aggressive, which took some time to get used to.

    Riding Experience

In the city, the Ather 450X was genuinely fun. It darted through traffic with ease, felt agile, and made commuting feel effortless. Compared to a usual motorcycle, the lack of gear changes and clutch work was refreshing.

The silent operation, quick throttle response, and compact dimensions worked in its favour during peak-hour traffic. However, on broken roads, the stiff suspension setup reminded me that this scooter was tuned more for performance than comfort.

While at it, let me also talk about the dedicated ride modes. There are four modes on offer, each altering the scooter’s responsiveness and, in turn, its range. Eco and Ride are the entry-level modes, prioritising maximum range with a slight trade-off in performance.

That said, it is the other two modes that genuinely impressed me. Sport is ideal if you want instant performance while still managing a decent range. Warp, on the other hand, is for going all out with the throttle, without worrying too much about the range you will eventually get. It is best suited for short bursts of fun on empty roads.

Overall, I found myself sticking to Ride mode most of the time, as it struck the best balance for my day-to-day usage.

    Range Anxiety

This was always at the back of my mind during my time with the scooter. With mixed usage and the convenience of home charging, the range remained manageable for the most part, but it did demand a certain level of discipline. Riding aggressively or spending more time in the higher ride modes had a noticeable impact on efficiency, which in turn reduced confidence, especially on days when unplanned detours or additional errands cropped up.

It was not a deal-breaker by any means, but it did subtly influence how I approached my daily rides. Routes were planned more thoughtfully, speeds were kept in check, and ride modes were chosen with a bit more care. Over time, this became part of the ownership experience, shaping riding habits rather than limiting them outright.

What Changes I Would Love to See in the Next Generation

A more comfortable suspension setup would be at the top of my wish list. Improving ride quality would make the scooter far more liveable on Indian roads.

A wider and more supportive seat would greatly enhance comfort, while better underseat storage would improve daily usability. Adding a USB charging port feels essential at this point, and slightly more forgiving brakes would make the riding experience smoother. Also, it is about time that Ather adds ABS to the braking system.

A bit more real-world range would also go a long way in reducing anxiety.

    Conclusion

Ather 450X Right Rear Three Quarter

Living with the Ather 450X for two months showed me how far electric scooters have come. It felt modern, quick, and genuinely fun to ride, especially after spending months on a conventional 125cc commuter. While it has its shortcomings in comfort, practicality, and range, it still stands out as a forward-thinking product that makes everyday commuting more engaging. With a few refinements, the next generation could be even closer to being the ideal electric scooter for daily use.
