Aprilia SR 160 BS6: First Ride Review

When Piaggio launched the Aprilia SR 150 a few years ago, it changed the way people perceived scooters. It wasn’t just about commuting or practicality anymore. It was about making a style statement as well. Plus, Piaggio also opened up a new world of performance scooters at an affordable price. In fact, this scooter managed to bring in some good business for the company too. But now it is 2020. That means, stricter emission norms. So, the Italian brand decided to chuck the 150cc variant and bring in a new 160cc model – the SR160. We rode it for a few hours and this is our first impression. 

The Visuals

For the BS6 version, the Italian brand hasn’t really worked on aesthetics. It continues to offer the same design and styling. There’s a bit of aggression on the fascia though. The side panels are large and sharp. The tail section too, remains similar to the 150cc variant. The only new addition to the BS6 variant is the colour. This Aprilia is now offered in a bright red paint scheme that does look quite refreshing.

The Aprilia SR160 misses out on a few modern bits that have started to come as standard in some other scooters. Things like an LED headlamp, LED turn-indicators, and LED tail lights are missing. There’s a semi-digital instrument cluster but it doesn’t get a Bluetooth integration. However, one visual aspect that makes the scooter standout are the 14-inch wheels

The Package

Almost all cycle parts on the SR160 have been carried forward from the SR150. So, the 14-inch wheels, the suspension setup, and the semi-digital instrument cluster have been retained on this 2020 version. The single-channel ABS too, has been carried forward. The SR160 gets halogen bulbs all around, which doesn’t feel nice.

The brakes have decent specs. The front is a 220mm disc with dual-piston calipers and at the rear, there’s a 140mm drum. The under-seat storage area can hold up some documents along with a half face helmet. There’s also a USB charging port placed inside the boot. But there’s no boot light. 

The Ride

The SR160 continues to carry the excitement that the older version had. With a new motor that churns out a marginal higher performance, the SR160 manages to be fun and exhilarating at the same time. In fact, this time around, the scooter has become a bit comfortable too, as the brand has reworked on the suspension. The front doesn’t jar much now, and the rear, with its adjustable feature, can be tuned to the rider’s specification. This has resulted into a comfortable riding habit.

 The 160cc engine that produces 10.7bhp and 11.6Nm is a bit more refined and also quieter. The throttle response is much better now, thanks to the inclusion of fuel-injection. There is some buzz on the floorboard, but not large enough to bother the rider.

The SR150 was known for its strict handling and it’s the same story with the SR160 too. The handles work extremely well. Be it over tight turns, or when there’s a lot of quick turn movement involved in heavy city traffic. The extremely comfortable ergonomics help in this situation. Even if you plan to go out of the city and hit some mountain passes, the SR160 will charm you with its cornering craving abilities. 

The brakes continue to be really good. In fact, the front brake has improved a bit when it comes to providing feedback on the lever. The rear is drum, but works decently. The ABS system is standard and works when needed.

The Aprilia SR160 is not an affordable scooter anymore. With BS6 updates and then the ABS inclusion, this scooter will set you back by Rs 1.27 lakh (on-road Mumbai), and that’s a lot of money for a scooter. But at that price, you get a scooter that isn’t just different from the rest, but also fun and exhilarating to ride. The styling is bound to make you look a lot cooler and then there’s also the brand. It’s premium, racy, and Italian. So for that kind of money, you get more than just a scooter. You get a fancier lifestyle.
