What is it?

The 450X is Ather’s sporty scooter, stacking just below the 450 Apex special edition model in the brand’s portfolio. It debuted in 2020, making it the oldest model in Ather’s current line-up, but it has received timely updates over the last five years. It’s a premium offering in terms of pricing and the 3.7kWh variant, which we’ve received for testing, costs Rs. 1.57 lakh, ex-showroom. When you choose to include the optional Pro Pack, which unlocks all the fancy and useful features, it adds another Rs. 17,000, making it a pricey proposition.
What’s the Plan?

The objective is to ride the Ather 450X thoroughly to tell you whether the scooter is really worth the steep price tag. We’ll be using it for daily office-home commutes and running errands to evaluate what’s good about it and what could be better. The test will comprise a real-world range test, charging time, and charge retention after being parked for a long period. We’ll also be evaluating the level of comfort, practicality, and performance it offers over prolonged usage, and whether the loads of features it comes with work glitch-free.
The Package

The 3.7kWh, lithium-ion battery of 450X powers a 6.4kW motor that produces 26Nm of torque. The IDC range of the scooter stands at 161km, while the top speed is rated at 90kmph. Charging the scooter from zero to 80 per cent at home, via a conventional plug point, takes about four hours thirty minutes. Juicing it up at the Ather Grid public charging station takes less than half that time.

The scooter is underpinned by an aluminium frame, which rides on 12-inch wheels at both ends and is suspended by telescopic front forks and a progressive rear monoshock. Braking is handled by a single disc at both ends with combined braking system. For the latest model, the company has employed MRF Zapper N e-Tred tyres that have been co-developed with Ather specifically for the 450 series. The scooter offers a rather small 22-litre underseat storage space and the kerb weight stands at 111.6kg.

In its stock form, the 450X gets a seven-inch touchscreen display with an Android Open Source operating system. It shows all the crucial data in standard form, but opting for Pro Pack unlocks a host of connectivity, safety, and convenience-oriented features, which I’ve listed below. What’s a bit strange is that the new features on the updated 450X, which give it an edge over other e-scooters, are only available if you opt for the Pro Pack, and not in the stock form. These include multi-mode traction control, Magic Twist regen, and five riding modes (Smart Eco, Eco, Ride, Sport, and Warp). Considering the somewhat steep price of the stock scooter (without Pro Pack), we think these niceties should’ve been available as standard.

Having said that, here’s a list of features that are available with Pro Pack, classified under Ride Assist and Ather Connect categories.
Ride Assist:
Five Ride modes
Multi-mode traction control
Magic Twist
Interactive UI
Auto hold
Auto indicator cut-off
Guide-me-home lights

Opting for Pro Pack also entitles the buyer for a five-year/60,000km battery warranty, which can be further extended to eight-years/80,000km by paying extra.
