BMW R 1300 GS Adventure

The BMW R 1300 GS Adventure has carried millions of adventures, both in kilometres and as memories. The big one in the GS family is meant for long roads, uncertain roads, bad roads and sometimes, no roads at all.

The new R 1300 GS Adventure takes that idea even further with every technological tool available to the two-wheel riding Neanderthal, a 30-litre fuel tank, a new 1300cc boxer engine and, in the case of our test bike, the Automated Shift Assistant system. This is the system that removes the clutch lever and allows the motorcycle to work either like a clutchless manual or a full automatic.

The variant we rode was the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure Option 719 Karakorum draped in this fantastic green that is priced at Rs. 29.30 lakh, ex-showroom, in its Auto Shift form. That is a lot of money by any yardstick. It also puts this motorcycle in a space where the buyer is not merely paying for displacement or badge value, but for a very deep set of electronics, comfort systems, safety tech and tremendous touring ability. Over two weeks and roughly 2,000km, we rode it on fast highways, broken city roads, Delhi/NCR traffic in the heat of June, sharp corners and plenty of off-road trails with dust, gravel, ruts and what not. The simple takeaway is that the GSA feels intimidating for the first few kilometres, but once you learn how it wants to be ridden, it starts shrinking around you.

There is no hiding the R 1300 GS Adventure, and so much so the Option 719 Karakorum variant makes even less effort to blend in. Finished in this lovely Aurelius Green metallic matte with gold finished details, gold cross-spoke wheels, gold handlebar and the Option 719 bits, it looks and feels expensive. The colour is not loud at all, but the sheer size of the motorcycle gives it road presence that few machines can match. Even in Delhi traffic, where big SUVs and luxury cars are common, the GSA pulls so much attention. Sorry to other road users though, once it gets hot it dissipates heat away from the rider towards the sides where everybody else is. One kid’s ice-cream almost melted y’know!

The new one gets a blocky, wide and purposeful design. Earlier GS Adventure models had a more rounded visual mass, while this new one looks more technical. Yes I’m aware the design has drawn a lot of conflicting opinions, but once you see it in person, you will definitely prefer the new one. The front end has the Matrix LED headlamp, auxiliary lights, hand guards with integrated indicators and broad wind protection panels which function beautifully. The 30-litre tank spreads wide around the rider, and that width gives the motorcycle its signature long-distance stance. From the saddle, you are always aware that you are sitting behind a lot of motorcycle. Ohh and the new headlights are a massive improvement on the previous generation. Better range and better spread now, but they do leave a bit to be desired against a few competitors.

The Option 719 Karakorum treatment adds a more premium edge to the package. The milled parts and small detail pieces elevate the cabin view, especially when you are sitting on the bike and looking down at the tank cover, handlebar, switchgear and that excellent TFT. These comfort seats with heating for both rider and pillion also give the bike a proper touring feel. We had no use for seat heating in June, but on winter rides through North India or high-altitude sections, you will be much happier.

Because the GSA has functional design, that windscreen and wind deflectors work very well as the speed builds up. The tank shape lets the knees sit naturally when seated, and when standing on the pegs off-road, the bodywork does not feel as awkward as the size would suggest at all. The adjustable foot controls and wide bars help here.

The 19 inch front wheel does mean it is less hard-edged than an extreme off-road machine with 21 inchers, but this guy is not trying to be a rally bike. It is a world tourer that can do serious trail work when asked.

The new 1300cc air/liquid-cooled, two-cylinder boxer engine has BMW ShiftCam tech. It produces 143bhp at 7,750rpm and 149Nm at 6,500rpm sending power through a six-speed gearbox and a shaft final drive.

It has enough bottom-end pull to move lazily in traffic, more than enough mid-range to make overtakes easy, and a snarly top-end to make a fully loaded adventure tourer feel seriously fast. And when the mood takes you, the big bruiser can handle itself extremely well through fast corners. You have to get used to the clattery idle, but that’s its character. Once the revs rise, it has a throaty roar which is ohh so satisfying.

Then there is a long list of equipment. There is Dynamic Suspension Adjustment, BMW Motorrad EVO Telelever at the front, EVO Paralever at the rear, Full Integral ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control, tyre pressure monitoring, Hill Start Control, multiple riding modes, heated grips, keyless ride, a storage compartment with charging, Bluetooth connectivity, a colour TFT screen, a 12V socket, LED lighting and BMW’s familiar multi-controller, (takes a breath!). The Option 719 also brings in the Riding Assistant package with its radar-based Active Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Change Warning.

As I mentioned our test bike had the Automated Shift Assistant which changes the riding experience most clearly. There is no clutch lever. Two actuators handle clutch operation and gear selection. You may still use the foot lever to change gears on the six-speed gearbox or just leave the bike in D and let it shift by itself. The system feels far more natural than expected. It still feels like a geared motorcycle, only one that is doing the clutch work for you.

The shift behaviour changes with the ride mode. In Road mode the gearbox upshifts early and keeps things calm for cruising on a highway. In Dynamic, it holds gears longer, responds faster, and lets the boxer engine stay in the red mist. In Rain, the response becomes softer and more relaxed, which helps when grip is poor or when you simply want the bike to behave with more patience. This level of tuning is what makes the ASA more useful than a simple automatic gearbox. It is tied into the wider character of the motorcycle.

The only place where the ASA feels limited is very slow and technical off-road riding. On a regular clutch-equipped motorcycle, you can feather the clutch and throttle with great precision while crossing rocks, ruts or awkward climbs. With ASA, the system is doing that job for you, and while it works well in most easy and medium trail conditions, it cannot fully replace the feel of your left hand when things get tricky. If a buyer plans to spend a large part of their time in serious off-road terrain, the conventional clutch setup will still make more sense. For most owners, however, ASA will make life much easier almost everywhere else.

Your brain looks at the ubiquitous weight of the giant, and then suddenly you notice how quickly the bike starts hiding it. At parking speeds, the R 1300 GS Adventure needs respect. It is tall, wide, and heavy, and you do not want to be careless while pushing it around or taking a tight U-turn on a broken slope. But once rolling, the boxer layout, the suspension geometry and the wide handlebar make the bike feel much more manageable than 269kg sounds on paper. It almost feels like all those forces are balancing out making it a very stable gyroscope.

In city use, especially through the freakishly hot NCR traffic, the GSA flat out surprised us. This is not a motorcycle one would buy for daily commutes, but it can do them without making the rider suffer.

In fact I did ride it to the office every day with more ease than some of the other less substantial motorcycles in my stable. The ASA is a major reason for that. Not having to work a clutch lever again and again in traffic makes a big difference. The engine has enough low-speed torque to move cleanly, the heat management is acceptable for a large-capacity motorcycle, and the riding position gives you a commanding view of the road (which, fun fact, you can increase and decrease on the move with Dynamic suspension). The width needs care in tight gaps though, but the balance is good once you trust the front end.

It is laughable how easily this thing devours long straight highways. And that 30-litre fuel tank gives it the range that touring riders will appreciate. During our ride with efficiency hovering around 16kmpl, a 500km tank range felt realistic.

The wind protection is excellent too, and that adjustable windscreen takes away most of the blast. Add cruise control to that, and long highway days become much more comfortable. Add in the ASA, the highway experience becomes even easier, because the bike sorts its own shifts while you manage speed, lines, traffic and distance.

That boxer engine is a gem. It has that familiar side-to-side pulse at idle, but once moving it feels smooth, strong and deeply flexible. You can ride it lazily in a tall gear, or you can switch to Dynamic and let the engine scream hard. It accelerates with far more urgency than its size suggests, and stops much quicker too. The fact that this big motorcycle can still pull long power wheelies with ASA tells you how much torque and control the package has.

Overtakes, on the other hand, need very little planning. A tiny throttle input is enough to pass most traffic, and when the road opens up, the GSA covers ground at a serious pace.

In the hills is where I personally have more fun with motorcycles, and the R 1300 GS Adventure delivers. The front end feels precise enough, the Telelever setup keeps the bike calm under braking, and the suspension holds the mass well through direction changes. That said, while the Telelever is very stable, that does come at the cost of some feel and feedback. You cannot flick it like a middleweight, and it never lets you forget that there are is a lot of motorcycle under you. But it is surprisingly eager once you settle into a rhythm. Dynamic mode wakes up the throttle and gearbox behaviour, and the bike starts flowing through corners with surprising pace.

The brakes deserve a special mention. Stopping a 269kg motorcycle with the pressure of one index finger is astonishing the first time you do it. The front brake setup has superb bite and feel, and the Full Integral ABS Pro works with the rest of the electronics to keep the bike steady even when braking hard.

Dynamic Brake Control adds another safety layer by reducing the chance of unwanted throttle input during hard braking. But we do believe the pads will go through a lot of wear quickly stopping all that mass. Worth it though!

Off-road, the GSA is more capable than most owners will ever need. In Enduro Pro, the electronics allow enough movement to let the bike work on loose surfaces, while still helping the rider stay in control and safely up on two wheels. It chewed through dust, gravel, mud, puddles and trails like it belonged there. The standing position is natural, the bars fall well to hand even for my 5’11ft frame, and the suspension gives the rider a lot of confidence. The limitation, if you can call it that, is the 19-inch front wheel and the sheer mass when the trail gets properly slow and technical. Skilled riders will still do remarkable things with it, but this is where a lighter, simpler adventure bike will ask for less muscle. We were able to ride through a river bed, but the pucker factor turned up to 8, at least.

The radar-based systems are useful, but they also need an Indian context. Active Cruise Control works beautifully on open highways and takes some stress away from long rides. Lane Change Warning is helpful because the bike has large blind spots around its wide body and luggage-ready rear. Forward Collision Warning with brake intervention is clever, but in India it can feel too sensitive.

Our traffic patterns involve close cuts, sudden gaps, and unpredictable movements, and the system can sometimes react earlier than expected. It brakes real sharp with chances of getting rear ended aplenty. The good part is that BMW lets you adjust or disable certain intervention levels depending on how and where you are riding. That adjustability matters more here than the feature itself, so work through different settings thoroughly.

This brings us to the one area that needs patience: the electronics interface. BMW’s TFT and multi-controller give access to a huge amount of control, but the menu layout needs time. You need to spend a few days understanding what sits where, what can be adjusted in each mode, and how the safety and comfort systems are linked. It is not instantly simple. But once you have set the motorcycle up to your liking, the reward is massive. You can make the GSA soft, calm, sharp, eager, cautious, relaxed or ready for dirt, all without changing the hardware.

Comfort is another major strength of the GSA. Its rider triangle is relaxed, the seat is supportive, and the pillion seat is properly usable. The optional luggage setup can make this a genuine long-distance machine. With the right accessory set, luggage capacity can be expanded to nearly 150 litres of storage for genuine touring advantage. It is about carrying two people, all their luggage and enough fuel to keep going through places where lesser motorcycles lose the game immediately.

The BMW R 1300 GS Adventure Option 719 with Auto Shift is not a motorcycle for everyone, and that has little to do with ability. At Rs. 29.30 lakh, ex-showroom, before taxes, insurance, accessories and maintenance, it sits in a space where the prospective buyers are equipped for the cost of ownership. This is not a motorcycle you stretch for casually. It needs money to buy, money to maintain, and enough riding time to justify what it can do.

But if you can afford it, the GSA is a fast, comfortable, safe, deeply adjustable and surprisingly easy motorcycle to live with. The ASA system makes city rides and highways much easier, the radar systems add more convenience, the wind protection is excellent, the engine is brilliant, and the brakes are outstanding. It also has the sort of all-road ability that most owners may never fully use, but will always be glad to have when the surface turns bad. You know how you will never take that Blancpain wrist watch fifty fathoms deep, but it’s good to know that it can bear it.

The only clear reason to avoid the ASA-equipped version is if your riding is heavily off-road and technical. In that case a conventional clutch lever gives more direct control. For everyone else, ASA genuinely reduces effort and makes the big GS easier to ride more of the time.

After 2,000km across highways, city heat, hill roads, and trails, the R 1300 GS Adventure left us deeply satisfied. It is expensive, heavy and loaded with more electronics than many riders will be able to learn in a month even. Yet it also feels like the product of years of learning around the Gelände/Straße philosophy. It can tour, commute, corner, cruise, climb and play. More importantly, it can do all of this without even breaking a sweat. So go out, and adventure!
