  • An Italian affair.

    Kali Sashank

Aprilias are known for their Italian pedigree, sheer performance, bespoke styling and legendary race history. When you buy an Aprilia sxr 160 in India, you suddenly end up feeling overwhelmed by this level of styling and premium that is only expected in the 4 pot bike segment. From the chubby fat, 120 section front and rear tyres which apparently happen to also be a segment-first in the country, to that intricately sculpted front fairing wrapped around those beautifully designed led DRL's and headlight setup, this scooter is the best head turner for that money. But just because it's sold under the 'scooter' badge doesn't mean this behaves like one. Under that broad black seat lies a powerful 160cc single-cylinder engine that produces 11hp and 10.8 nm of torques. Add that to a well modified sr 160 chassis and "slightly" softer suspension setup and what you get is an absolute beast of the scooter. 0 - 50 km/h comes in under 5 seconds.0 to 75 km/h in 10 seconds. With a modest kerb weight of 129 kg's, flat out, it would still do 100kmph effortlessly. Overtaking cars and lorry drivers on good, wide highways is just a throttle turn away. On a scooter. Apart from minor vibrations at the very top end, it feels smooth and stable. The suspension setup is on the stiffer side which provides good high-speed stability. This along with those proportionate tyre's offer massive grip on the tarmac to tackle sharp corners at good speeds. All the bumps and cracks can be easily felt through the handlebars. The only comforting factor is the rear suspension which is set up on the softer side, so the pillion has a more comfortable ride as compared to the rider. The brakes offer a very strong bite. 60 - 0 kmph comes in under 3 seconds with aggressive braking, which now thanks to the included single-channel abs system in the front and rear drum is more reassuring and less likely to land you in a hospital. Within the chaos of a city ride, mild throttle for up to 35 - 45 kmph feels relaxed and smooth with an average mileage of 32 - 35 kmpl. Out on the highways, cruising at a constant 75 - 85 kmph gave a respectable 40 kmpl, which seemed pretty good considering the fact that oil isn't cheap these days. Just like any other Italian bike, this one is no different; it has a sense of character that you can correlate to such as a fellow human being. And just like any other human being this to has some flaws. The seats are awkwardly curved up and if you're on the plus size you often end up slipping down towards the front whenever you jam on the brakes too hard. The dashboard plastic bits and parts could have been fitted neatly. Bluetooth at this premium price point should have been offered as standard. Even the side stand has to be bought separately and fitted on by a mechanic. The floorboard could do well with a gripper rubber mat and the same goes for the pillion footrests. But all these mini flaws add to the tough and bold character of this scooter. Sure, for that price of 1.5 - 1.6 lakhs inr (on-road) you don't get all the clever tech bits like the engine kill switch, park brake, side-stand alarm, idling stop system, silent starter system, etc., nor do you get the vastly spread service network and Assurity that some other notable scooter brands have to offer. What you pay for is an Italian design. You pay for the brand. Italians over the years have built up a very good reputation for designing and building some very high performance and luxury vehicles such as the Lamborghinis, the Ferraris, Maserati, Ducati and the paganism, to name a few. Cut to aprilia, and you realize that this is no less of a luxury statement. Much like the Vespa (also an Italian design) this company Aprilia, too has an incredible history and over the years has evolved developing its own remarkable pedigree, the likes of which can be found in this beautifully crafted Italian machine called the sxr 160. You pay for the exclusivity of riding and owning an Aprilia. And this one is probably the value for money of them all.

Honest review after riding 2689 kms on sxr 160.
I bought this beauty in June 2021, the ride quality is awesome (i am 5.7). I already have activa ,so using the sxr only for long rides. The best part is , you will never feel tired after running 200-250kms.

Average achieved when single occupancy - 43.8 km/l
Average achieved when double occupancy - 40.3 km/l
Before first service average was around 35-36 km/l.
Where ever you take this beauty ..People will notice and start asking about this.
    Negative points -
After 1500kms, there is small noise at tail lamp, loose screw but sorted out by taking it to service center.
It seems Aprilia is not working on there fuel indicator sensor, most of the time wrong readings.
Side stand should have been more angular.
Aprilia should introduce , accessories for this maxi-scooter.

  • Better options are available

    Ashok

    1. After-sales should be your primary factor when choosing a motor vehicle. I made this mistake. You please do not. Even here in Pune, after-sales is very poor. Also, service cost is quite high, and needs every 3 months. It's a bad situation.
    2. This scooter is heavy at,129kg. This is a good thing on the highway. Cruising at 80 feels planted. But in the city its a headache. Don't try to drive it like activa in traffic. You will regret it. Trust me.
    3. It's very costly now. I bought it at 1.26 lac ex-showroom. Now it's 1.46lac. Better options are available.
    4. Suspension is bouncy and does not inspire confidence at higher speeds.
    5. Fuel efficiency is not good considering the poor performance it still gives 30 on light throttle.

  • Supercool Maxi Scooter - SXR 160

    Shivashankar S

Reading many reviews and looking at major auto website reviewers' opinions, and comparisons with Aerox; it was all very confusing to pick a maxi scooter. After a lot of thought, I decided to go with test-riding every possible scooter in the market.
After many test rides including the Aerox, I decided to go with the Aprilia SXR 160.
Before I got to the details of SXR 160, I saw a lot of videos that said Aerox was a much better choice. I do not know about the rider's choice about Aerox there but it was not as convenient as suggested. Using the backseat is a pain, it is like climbing a hill. The lack of Footboard space that too for tall individuals like me (6'1) is very inconvenient and cramped where you cannot move your foot. The ride I took for a few kilometers, I realized that it was never that comfortable to ride. The breaks were not as sharp. The front crash guard storage too is not something great with not-so-good plastics. Styling is not as good as SXR 160 with improper indicator placements and not all LED lightings.
On the other hand, the Aprilia SXR 160, may not have hit the top speeds of the Aerox; but it is not practical for both bikes to ride over 80 or 90 km from a road safety standpoint and keeping ride fatigue in mind. Having said this, if you are looking for a ride speed less than 90 kmph you have a winner in the Aprilia SXR 160.
The Aprilia SXR 160 has a great ride Quality. It hits a 60 kmph within around 8 seconds and to the top speed it takes close to 15 to 20 seconds there on. Unless you are on a clear path or highway, reaching the top speed might be not practical for any scooter I guess.
The maneuvering of this bike is a piece of cake. Though the SXR 160 is big and looks bulky, the cornering and turns in city riding or top-speed road curves are simply a breeze. The handle is very smooth and never feels bulky or inconvenient to handle. The ride feels very confident with excellent road grip. I loved overtaking in traffic and zipping through in traffic which was quick and the engine was like I hear you let's speed away.
The brakes are amazingly sharp. When applying both front and back breaks, it stops almost instantly. I realized that the back brake was mostly enough to stop this bike. Gives you so much confidence to ride in cities or highways.
The front telescopic shocks are smooth and even the back shocks along with a rider were very comfortable with minimal jerks.
The 2023 model's sound of this scooter is less noisy (compared to the 2022 ones). But at high speeds, it simply sounds like a regular motorbike with the grunt. There is a carbon finish on the handlebar covers including the side panels. The plastic finish is much better compared to 2022 or prior models. It also comes with OBD2 diagnostics.
With the color option we had, I chose the red one which was eye-catching and the presence it created was great.
Seating is pretty much comfortable and I suggest going for after-market gel seating or cushions for a long ride. The pillion seats are good and with a big grab handle, it feels safe to hold on bumpy roads.
The mileage of this bike for the engine size is still good. I could get a city mileage of around 38 to 40 kmpl as compared to around 42 to 45 kmpl on highways at good speeds.
The overall styling of the SXR 160 is very smooth and looks like a monocoque body from front to back. The headlight panel along with a very nice looking DRL and indicators. Also, the back brake light and indicators are all so smoothly put together. The all-LED lighting makes for excellent visibility.
    The things it lacks:
No side steps for ladies where they could sit one-sided which would have also helped them climb onto the back seats.
Bluetooth connectivity where a cluster has no map integration. However, given the positioning of the cluster of any bike, I did not feel the need for it.
App connectivity could have been a good option to see vehicle performance.
Finally coming to the buying experience, I had an option of buying a 2021 manufactured vehicle or a 2023 manufactured one. The 2021 was 30k to 35k cheaper given the manufacturing date. I initially made a decision to buy a 2021 model SXR 160 as it was a great bargain. My fault was that I booked it on Sunday and took delivery on Monday all cash. The vehicle was not so great looking as it had blemishes and the front shocks were not great too and looked like it was pretty much ridden, but given it was an auspicious day, I picked it up as my family was alone and did not want to make them feel bad and took the scooter home. Guess the dealership did not have enough time to test, check, and deliver the vehicle given the short timeline. The thought of buying a new vehicle with such shortcomings was eating me away the whole day I called the dealership the same night and they immediately agreed to replace the vehicle with a 2023 model without any questions asked. So came home, the 2023 manufactured Aprilia SXR 160.
The Aprilia buying experience with Pinnacle Initiatives in Bangalore was pretty good with excellent customer centricity and service. Uday the owner of the dealership was very cooperative and made all required arrangements and David the salesperson provided prompt service by delivering the brand new 2023 vehicle at home and picking the older previous model. They also gave me a 2nd year free AMC for the bike for the ordeal I had gone through.
Overall the Aprilia SXR 160 is a great purchase for people looking for a comfortable ride with great looks.

    Tips for other riders

To maintain the bike exteriors, it is best to get a ceramic coating which is hydrophobic. This will ensure the outside is protected from paint fade, dust, water & bird dropping residues and also gives a great shine. Follow regular maintenance as per service manual. I recommend an oil once every 4k to 5k kilometers or six months once with 10w40 fully synthetic oil. I got extended AMC for year 2 which saves regular service costs. Ensure the air filters are changed regularly to ensure optimum performance and fuel efficiency.

I bought it for Rs.1.50 lakhs on road in Vijayawada and the riding experience is way far better than it's competitors like Burgman and Ntorq.
Pros : Looks, Comfort, Ground clearance.
    Cons : Mileage it's just 30 to 35 that's all.
If you are looking to buy this scooter go blindly for it without any hesitation

  • Sxr 160- honest review after 2689kms

    Shrikant Karanjkar

Honest review after riding 2689 kms on sxr 160.
I bought this beauty in June 2021, the ride quality is awesome (i am 5.7). I already have activa ,so using the sxr only for long rides. The best part is , you will never feel tired after running 200-250kms.
    Trips made -
    1.Satara to pune
    2.Pune - mahabaleshwar - pune
    3.Pune-satara-pune
    4.Pune- Satara-pachgani-mahabaleshwar -pune
    5.Khadakwasla dam, panshet
    6.Pune-rajugurnagar- pune
    7.City drives occasionally
Average achieved when single occupancy - 43.8 km/l
Average achieved when double occupancy - 40.3 km/l
Before first service average was around 35-36 km/l.
Where ever you take this beauty ..People will notice and start asking about this.
    Negative points -
After 1500kms, there is small noise at tail lamp, loose screw but sorted out by taking it to service center.
It seems Aprilia is not working on there fuel indicator sensor, most of the time wrong readings.
Side stand should have been more angular.
Aprilia should introduce , accessories for this maxi-scooter.
    Overall loved the sxr 160

I recommend an oil once every 4k to 5k kilometers or six months once with 10w40 fully synthetic oil. I got extended AMC for year 2 which saves regular service costs. Ensure the air filters are changed regularly to ensure optimum performance and fuel efficiency.

I bought it for Rs.1.50 lakhs on road in Vijayawada and the riding experience is way far better than it's competitors like Burgman and Ntorq.
Pros : Looks, Comfort, Ground clearance.
    Cons : Mileage it's just 30 to 35 that's all.

  • Sxr 160- honest review after 2689kms

    Shrikant Karanjkar

Honest review after riding 2689 kms on sxr 160.
I bought this beauty in June 2021, the ride quality is awesome (i am 5.7). I already have activa ,so using the sxr only for long rides. The best part is , you will never feel tired after running 200-250kms.
    Trips made -
    1.Satara to pune
    2.Pune - mahabaleshwar - pune
    3.Pune-satara-pune
    4.Pune- Satara-pachgani-mahabaleshwar -pune
    5.Khadakwasla dam, panshet
    6.Pune-rajugurnagar- pune
    7.City drives occasionally
Average achieved when single occupancy - 43.8 km/l
Average achieved when double occupancy - 40.3 km/l
Before first service average was around 35-36 km/l.
Where ever you take this beauty ..People will notice and start asking about this.
    Negative points -
After 1500kms, there is small noise at tail lamp, loose screw but sorted out by taking it to service center.
It seems Aprilia is not working on there fuel indicator sensor, most of the time wrong readings.
Side stand should have been more angular.
Aprilia should introduce , accessories for this maxi-scooter.
    Overall loved the sxr 160

  • Exciting premium scooter in market.

    Lemuel Bobby

This scooter is mainly for enthusiasts. Priced in the bike category with many first in segment features this scooter can be reliable for those looking for weekend short trips. This scooter is for those who are die hard fans of aprilia ; need performance oriented scooter and those who need to take short trips in weekend. Main attraction is its bike like design at the front and all information digital meter with accessory Bluetooth connectivity. Mileage company claim is 35kmpl. Top speed is 95kmph (which is low for a 160cc bike) but at highways it is low. 75-85kmph can cruise for long time. Boot space is 21litres fuel tank is 7 liters.
