Long Term Report 1 - Mahindra Gusto

Mahindra Gusto VX

Mahindra Two Wheelers launched the Gusto last year and still sells it along with the Duro and Rodeo UZO 125. Unlike the other scooters from their portfolio, the Gusto is Mahindra's first indigenously developed product.

The Gusto is a 110cc scooter available in three variants - DX, HX and VX. The DX is the base variant priced at Rs 45,187, followed by the mid-variant HX costing Rs 49,000 and the fully-loaded VX variant at Rs 49,187. In terms of these ex-showroom costs, the Mahindra Gusto VX, also our long-termer, has been priced at a premium of Rs 4,000 over the base variant as it comes equipped with some segment-first features.

The Gusto boasts of a height adjustable seat, which is a unique feature not seen on any other scooter in India yet and rightfully so, Mahindra has patented it. The other unique features include find-me lamps and a remote flip key that were introduced with Mahindra's Centuro motorcycle. The find-me lamps guide the rider to locate the scooter when parked in a crowded or a dark place. The key flips in like most car keys and can be neatly tucked away. It also doubles up as a remote to locate your scooter and gets a small torch to find the key hole. The VX version comes loaded with all these features, while the base DX trim misses out all these features. The mid HX variant only gets the adjustable seat option.

Coming to the mechanicals, the Gusto is powered by a single-cylinder 110cc engine that produces 8bhp of power and 8.5Nm of torque. Mahindra calls it as the M-TEC mill that comes mated to a CVT transmission. It delivers an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 61kmpl.

Mahindra Gusto VX

The tall-looking scooter is targeted at both male and female buyers. Mahindra says the name Gusto is derived from the word ‘Gust’, which means a sudden strong current of wind, symbolizing the spirit of freedom. They also say that the new consumer inspired technology innovations on the Gusto are expected to usher in winds of change in the way consumers experience scooters. The company has a lot of expectations from this scooter and we will be testing the VX variant rigorously to see what it is actually capable of. We will give out periodic reports to help you understand how the Gusto competes in the horde of 110cc scooters in the Indian market and if the product delivers an exceptional value for money for the buyer.
