BMW, Honda, Yamaha join hands to develop rider safety technology

BMW, Honda and Yamaha have joined hands to develop a new technology that will enhance the rider’s safety during rides.

The three manufacturers have collaborated to evaluate and develop systems that will allow motorcycles to communicate with other vehicles. With this new technology, the riders will have advanced warning of changing road conditions, traffic and accidents. This technology is called Cooperative-Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). This initiative by the three companies is taking place under the name 'Connected Motorcycle Consortium'. They want other manufacturers to join them in developing the technology for motorcycles.

This system will help riders maintain a safe speed and distance, riding within the lane, avoid overtaking in critical situations and safely pass intersections and thus help in safety and traffic management. The companies believe that if individual motorcycles are able to communicate with the each other, the positive impact on the rider and the roads will be huge.

The C-ITS technology is already being used in cars. However, it can’t be transferred directly to motorcycles due to limited space available on the bike. The electronic systems need to be smaller and should operate during rains and dusty terrain.

This is a brilliant initiative by the trio. With such technologies, riding on the public roads will be safer and not just for the riders, but also for the other vehicles and pedestrians on the road.
