Government may skip a stage and adopt BS-VI

The current government is serious about making a big difference in the Indian automotive industry. It recently drafted a new motor vehicles act and showed its intention to make ABS and airbags mandatory on all cars. Now the Indian government is planning to skip an emission norm stage and adopt BS-VI directly.

As per the government, the oil companies can easily adopt and supply the quality of fuel required in Bharat Stage VI. The Indian vehicles currently run on BS-IV norm, but as per the government body, the fuel quality specifications for BS-V and BS-VI are nearly the same.  Because of this it makes complete sense to skip BS-V stage and move directly to BS-VI that will make Indian vehicles on par with the global market.

If the governing body approves of this policy then all the Indian manufacturers will be asked to upgrade and deliver the right technology. The auto industry, however, feels that higher level norms and technology can be adopted only in stages. In order to upgrade engines from BS-IV to BS-VI, the industry would be required to infuse around Rs 50,000 crore over the next few years.

This is a very good move by the government. This will make sure that the vehicular emission norms will be almost closer to the European ones, considering the fact that many Indian manufacturers sell their vehicles in that region. As per the timeline in the national auto fuel policy, BS-IV standards are to be adopted across India by 2017 and BS-V by 2020. BS-VI is to be introduced in 2024.
