Avenger 150 Street vs Gixxer SF vs Fazer FI

Bajaj recently dropped a bomb when it launched the Avenger 150 Street in India, along with its 220cc siblings. The 150cc segment had been missing a cruiser for a long time, and Bajaj decided to spice things up by plonking the Pulsar 150 DTS-i engine in this versatile tubular double cradle type chassis.

However, this does not guarantee a success for the Bajaj Avenger 150 Street, as the entry-level touring motorcycle segment already has two very popular and well-established names – the Suzuki Gixxer SF and the Yamaha Fazer FI. While they might have different body styles, these three motorcycles attract the same set of buyers and essentially serve the same purpose. Here is an abstract comparison of the Avenger 150 Street, Gixxer SF and the Fazer FI.

Design and Engine

Amongst the three, the approach taken by Suzuki Gixxer SF and Yamaha Fazer FI is more or less the same. Both of them are based on their 150cc streetfighter siblings and the front is all where the difference lies. While Fazer FI follows the lines of its litre-class namesake with its half-fairing, the Gixxer SF is fully faired motorcycle. The Avenger on the other hand seems to draw inspiration from the Harley-Davidson Street 750. The blacked-out theme for the engine, exhaust, frame and rubber bellows for the front suspension, all give the Avenger 150 Street the undertones sports cruiser.

Suzuki Gixxer SF

The Avenger 150 Street is offered with the 150cc twin-spark DTS-i engine, borrowed from the Pulsar 150 DTS-i. Though the power has been reduced to 14.3bhp, the torque number has been raised to 12.5Nm, with the low-end and mid-range getting 10 per cent more grunt than the Pulsar 150 DTS-i. This should suit the motorcycle's character, and usability in cities.

Even when it comes to the powertrain, the Gixxer SF and Fazer FI retain their siblings' engine and gearbox. The Gixxer SF gets a carburetted 155cc single-cylinder engine, which delivers 14bhp and 14Nm of torque through a five-speed gearbox. The engine has been tuned with focus on performance, and the Gixxer SF delivers abundantly in this aspect. The aerodynamic fairing also helps its cause in achieving a higher top speed than the competitors, and even the naked Gixxer. In terms of technology, the Fazer FI is a step ahead, as its 149cc single-cylinder mill gets a fuel-injection system. Delivering through a five-speed gearbox, this engine has been tuned for refinement and good fuel efficiency, while performance takes a back seat.

Features and Cycle Parts

In terms of equipment, the Avenger 150 Street comes furnished with basic, yet quintessentially cruiser-ish features like a low and flat handlebar, long and cushy seat and alloy wheels. The instrument console gets a miniscule digital display while the fuel gauge is mounted on the fuel tank. The Gixxer SF and Fazer FI meanwhile are comparatively lavish with their fully-digitised instrument console which get a host of modern functionalities, modern frames and adjustable rear suspension.

The efficiency of the 150cc engine along with the huge 14-litre tank should help the Avenger 150 Street's cause when it comes to real world range. The Gixxer SF and Fazer FI both get a 12-litre fuel tank. When it comes to suspension, the Gixxer SF and Fazer FI both get a 7-step adjustable monoshock in the rear, and conventional telescopic forks at the front. The front tyre of the Avenger 150 Street also rides on telescopic forks while the rear gets non-adjustable twin shocks. All three bikes get a disc brake at the front and a drum unit in the rear.

The Gixxer SF and Fazer FI are also pretty similar when it comes to tyres, with both of them getting a tubeless tyre for the front wheel and a radial for the rear. The Avenger 150 Street on the other hand, gets tubeless tyres for the front 17-inch and rear 15-inch wheels. Bajaj is offering the Avenger 150 Street in a single midnight blue paint scheme. The Gixxer SF is available in three paint schemes including a race-inspired Suzuki blue livery while the Fazer FI was recently released in three new paint schemes to capitalise on the festive season.

Price

The Avenger 150 Street, Gixxer SF and the Fazer FI are motorcycles for customers who need an efficient commuter for their everyday grind, but can spend some extra cash in favour a styling. Both the Gixxer SF and the Fazer FI are a result of the Indian customers' affinity for the flair and allure that faired motorcycles offer. And the Avenger 150 Street offers the same, albeit in a different way.

Amongst the two faired motorcycles, the Gixxer SF has a slight edge thanks to its lower price tag and the full fairing. However, with a price tag of Rs 74,000, the Avenger 150 Street is a whole lot cheaper than the Gixxer SF and the Fazer FI, which are priced at Rs 83,439 and Rs 86,805, (all ex-showroom, Delhi). Stay tuned to BikeWale for a detailed comparison of the three motorcycles.
